Sequim is located in one of the most beautiful spots in the world with the Olympic Mountains to the south, the saltwater Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north, gorgeous Vancouver Island and the San Juan Islands beyond, with sunny, dry, temperate weather that the rest of Washington and so many other coastal communities envy. Sequim has unique gift shops, murals, antique stores, galleries and fine restaurants to choose from as well as several special events for area residents scattered throughout the year. The Irrigation Festival in early May, the Lavender Festival in July and the Harvest Festival in October, to name a few, unite the community in celebration. On Saturdays, the Open-Air Market is a popular destination where local growers sell fresh produce and artisans / hobbyists their hand-crafted items. The Sequim Aquatic and Recreational Center is also a frequented and fine facility for area residents. The SARC has a full size Olympic pool, shallow pool, sauna, hydro therapy pool, and a water slide for the children. There is also a gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, aerobics and karate classes, as well as racquetball courts.
For outdoor enthusiasts, nearby Puget Sound, the Pacific Ocean and spectacular Lake Crescent in addition to the Olympic National Park and Forest are natural playgrounds offering endless recreational opportunities. This portion of the National Park region lies in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and contains some of the driest ecosystems on the Olympic Peninsula yet only 80 miles away is the Olympic Rain Forest with the greatest rainfall in the continental U. S., highlighting the amazing variety of environments afforded one fortunate enough to live here. Stretching from high mountains to salt water, the district includes alpine botanical wonderlands, several major rivers, and the 50,000-acre Buckhorn Wilderness. Many campgrounds scattered throughout the mountains make weekend escapes into the forest easy and enjoyable. For sports enthusiasts, the professional and collegiate athletic teams of the greater Seattle area are world-class. Basketball’s SuperSonics, football’s Seahawks, and baseball’s Mariners all have new facilities located in vibrant Seattle surrounded by major stores, boutique shops, restaurants, cafes, coffeehouses and nightclubs. Additionally, Seattle is home to the University of Washington, an outstanding institution of higher learning. The UW Huskies are a Pacific 10 Conference member noted for both athletic and academic quality. Sequim is blessed with an impressive number of quality restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops ranging from BBQ to Thai, seafood to Szechwan, Applebee’s to The Oak Table which is a local treasure renowned for the world’s finest breakfasts. Home Depot, Wal-mart, Costco, Sears, JCPenny, Safeway, and QFC satisfy those who like to shop till they drop. The two-hour drive to Seattle is most pleasant, meandering through lovely forests and along gorgeous saltwater bays, but it’s long enough so we have no commuting traffic, yet short enough for Sequim residents to easily and enjoyably access the Mariners, Seahawks, Supersonics, UW Huskies, Seattle Symphony, Northwest Ballet, theatre, and jazz clubs. The name Sequim means “quiet waters” in the native language of the local S’Klallam tribe. Offshore, these calm waters are home to world-renowned salmon, halibut, and Dungeness Crab, while nearby Olympic forests are home to herds of magnificent elk. Famous for frequent sunshine, inviting waters, gentle-sloping forested hillsides and nearby mountainous terrain, Sequim offers its residents a lifestyle unique and inviting compared with any other place in the world. Once new residents settle down and become accustomed to the delights of Sequim and the North Olympic Peninsula virtually all say that there is no better place to live than this friendly, delightful Pacific Northwest coastal community. |
